Auto Stop/Start not working

Thanks for sharing your experience.

It was the dealer's service advisor who told me about the system being locked out and I have asked for further technical documentation for this. Will see him again end of the week and hopefully get more answers.

I never got the low battery warning before though. So sounds like my battery just can't get above the voltage threshold for start/stop to work

My auto stop/start has not worked for 2 months. I put battery on a charger overnight and now works. I have had Land Rover look at this before. They charge my battery and tell me everything is okay. It seem to me they are treating the symptom not the problem. Question is why does the battery not stay charged enough to keep auto stop/start working.

I do not go on long drives too often. I live less than a mile from the commuter bus. 1 day a week I drive to work which is 80 miles round trip. I guess I drive less that 125 miles a week. Could the problem be that I don't drive enough to keep the battery fully charged?

Sounds like my dealer has been charging my battery instead of "resetting the system" to allow the stop start to work.

How old is your car? My car is almost 3 years old so they might say the battery needs to be replaced. Will they replace the battery under warranty?

I've been having auto-start/stop issues with my car since day 1. It'd work for about a month or so then it stops working. Each time I bring it in, they reset the gateway module and recharge the battery and send me on my way. I just brought my car in for the same issue again and they tell me it's because my dash-cam is plugged in and it's draining the battery.

I have my dash cam plugged into one of the USB ports, but it turns off when the car is shut off. My understanding is that the USB port is not powered when the car is shut off. Can anyone confirm this? I'll do a test later to see if I can figure out if any voltage is flowing through it. I have a feeling they're just BS-ing me. I'm hoping I can go back next time and ask them to change the battery.

There was a long discussion on the UK forum about the problem.


One thing effecting the start/stop is a low battery , but the car tries not to overcharge the battery to save fuel and will allow the battery to partially discharge.


Also when braking the alternator goes into full charge to recover some charge.

I have same issue with my 2015 full size range rover. Car covered under CPO warranty, but dealer tells me its caused because of fault in fuse box which they say is not covered. I don't believe it. Never really used it, but if the technology is there and it doesn't work, it affects the value of the car. I'll be taking this up with LandRover corporate. Not paying $1,500 the dealer wants to fix it.

Mine (2015 HSE) never worked past the second month. I mentioned it during each service, and the following day, it stopped working.

The issue is the battery. It seems that the battery gets drained a bit after you shut down. I didn't drive the Disco for a month and the battery was kaput. I've replaced the battery twice, once under warranty, and the last on my account. If you can keep it on a trickle charger all the time it would work. I cannot.

My disco only has 25,000 km on the odo.

I actually prefer not to have the auto start-stop, even though the little light seems to think it works.

The technicians know it always fails.

Hello,
I had the same issue with my 2016 HSE. There is nothing wrong with the vehicle, all you have to do is next time you go for service ask the technician to reset(reboot) the program. My car worked after rebooting the software.

2016 Disco, purchased in 2016 with 10k miles. Start/stop stopped working after the first year. In 2017, took it in at 20K and told the dealership about start/stop. They said, 'the battery is going bad'.

Still have the same battery but since early March (remote work), limited usage, low battery message has been popping up more frequent.

Sat morning - low battery message/turn car. Purchased an H7 AMG battery at O'Reilly's just in case ($210), drove 350 miles. 200 miles into my trip, display shutoff/restarted while driving. Stopped to pump gas, no message, after 350 miles, shut off, no message.
Sun morning - no message, started up just fine. Drove 350 miles, turn off for gas, no message.
Going to see what happens the rest of the week, not driving much.

Problem is that when these dudes check your car at the dealer, they turn off all the mod cons, like auto lights, auto wipers, climate control, heated seats etc etc...then reset battery monitor system and surprisingly stop/start works. As soon as you drive out the dealer and put these systems back on- it fails...

at the end of the day stop/start maybe saves you $50 US a year on fuel- so not worth it in my opinion, however, its a principal, the car is installed with this technology and so it should work as designed..My wife's car has so much more tech than the Disco, never had an issue with stop/start not working with all the mod cons on...

Hi I just bought a DS and the auto stop start did not work even with a fully charged battery, so it went back to the dealer, when I got the car back (now all working) I was told it needed a software update.
I would have thought buying a second hand car from a main dealer they would have checked all this out first..
This is my first Land Rover having had Mercedes Benz cars for the last 32 years... ummm...... with no problems last car 188,000 miles and still perfect.

I've had issues with stop / start not working. It is worth buying a scanner such as the Autel AP200 which is brilliant and will show stop/start inhibit in the live data under GWM (Gateway module).
Originally I had 2 faults in the GWM which were showing on my previous scanner (iCarsoft), but I couldn't clear them. As the car had recently been purchased, I took it back for the dealer to check. They mentioned the same faults, but said that they were not affecting the stop/ start and I would need to go to a Land Rover dealer to get it checked (I don't think so !!). This is when I bought the Autel scanner as it had facilities to reset the battery monitor. This allowed me to clear the fault codes in the Gateway Module and reset the QCCM which controls the HVAC system in conjunction with the stop/ start system to reduce battery drain. The stop /start system then worked ok.
However after a couple of months it stopped working again. This time there were no faults shown on the scanner, so I suspected that the battery may be at fault. This was duly changed and the BMS (battery monitor) reset. The stop / start worked again.....for a bit.
After a couple of months, you guessed it no stop/start again. I plugged in the scanner (Autel) and in the live data it showed the inhibit as cold cranking amps too low. This should not be the case with a brand new battery so I suspected that the BMS may be at fault.
I have now changed the BMS, fitted to the negative battery terminal, for a newer secondhand one LR038721 (they are about £37+vat new). So far so good. The start / stop seems to work a lot more quickly than it used to and has not stopped again yet....fingers crossed.

Update
I purchased the AP200, performed the BMS service, cleared fault codes and stop/start started working straight away.... #success
