questions!

Hi, I am a new owner of a 2016 Discovery Sport HSE. Because we do not have a dealer nearby, I have some questions.

I had to have the car taken in to the dealership after I purchased because the battery died for no reason. the service dept told me there was a lot of updates that needed to be done and once they were done, the battery issue was fixed. I asked at the time if I could do the remote start and he said no, it didn't come with my car. I reread the manual and decided to try and called the dealership this week and had them set me up in the system and now I have remote start! yay!

so here are my questions -
1. Can I do the gesture tailgate with my model? I have tried several times and nothing happens.

2. I notice when I am stopped, and the "Automatic start/stop" is in use, sometimes I can hear it stop, the car will be really quiet like its not running, and other times it just idles loudly. if I don't use the auto start/stop, it still idles loudly. I asked the service dept about this and he said they listened and think it sounds normal. Its a loud rattling idle, surely that can't be how loud it is?

3. Am I able to leave the car running and take the key with me and lock the car? I tried the other day and it honked twice and I didn't feel comfortable doing that so I got back in and killed the engine.

4. I bought the car used, it has 14k miles on it. when I called the dealership to sign me up for the remote start, it did not have any record of the vin number. does this mean that the previous owner did not get the oil changed on it? is land rover's service department global , to reflect past service appointments on cars, with prior owners?

I think that is it for now :)

Welcome to the forum!

Here are my answers:

1. Gesture tailgate was an option that came with the LUX version (HSE - Luxury) - you should get a Monroney (window sticker) from the selling dealer or a VIN check online website that can tell you what the car came with.

2. The auto start stop can be annoying but it is meant to save you fuel. As for the idle, mine is very stable and not loud - sometimes with the radio on, I don't hear it stop and then restart. Maybe you need to make sure you are running on 91+ octane premium fuel. Run some BG41K thru the gas tank to remove any water that may have infiltrated the fuel system.

3. You can leave the car running and then leave with the car - I do that a lot when I forget stuff from the house. But I don't think you can lock it - you don't need to- the car won't go anywhere without the key in the cabin.

4. No records means nothing. The owner could have taken the car into an independent mechanic to do the oil change. That's what I did at 10K miles when the LR phone app told me of the upcoming service. Paid $110 and saved about $300 from a dealer doing the same work from my independent to change the oil, check fluids, and reset the oil change service indicator.

Hey, Trendyb - will answer what I can -

1. Very unlikely you have the gesture tailgate (this has been discuss on the forum before). Supposed to be standard on 2017s, but an option (or not) on 2016s.

2. I have not noticed any difference in idle noise dependent upon auto start/stop.

3. Yes, you can take the key with you while the car is running (I have). I have done this to run into the dry cleaners, etc. - but didn't leave the car for an extended period of time, so not sure how long it will run for, etc. The two beeps are a reminder that the engine is running.

4. As far as the registration of the VIN, my dealer did that to activate the InControl services (in case of accident, breakdown, etc. - like OnStar). Don't think there is any relationship to that and whether they ever changed the oil (could have done that somewhere other than the dealer).

Hope that helps. Welcome to the group!

Thanks, so now I can stop looking like I am trying to kick the end of the trunk...lord.

I use 91 octane. Its almost like a diesel engine sound.

The oil change service indicator is not showing, so should I assume the oil has been changed? There was no paperwork in the car to show that he had changed the oil.

So the car won't drive if the key is not in the car? So if I run into the house or the post office or convenience store, I can leave it running and no one can take it. I should prob just turn the car off and lock anyway, but its a small town...
Trendy i have gesture tailgate it is listed in my options and i have sensors never gotten it to work lol. So probably not a big loss. My dealer even told me it stinks.

Your oil change light would be on if it was not serviced unless prior owner was super lazy/cheap and had it reset without an oil change. (no idea why someone would do this but it can be done).

While you dont have remote start you might have the remote security feature. Check on that. I am not sure if they are separate but some people seem to talk like they are. This would allow you to lock your car while its running by using the app.
I have remote start now. the service guy said it didn't come with my car, but when i called the dealership, the sales manager walked me through how to program it inside the car, and he got my info into the system.

I am assuming I don't have the HUD either? it does not show up on my menu display like the manual suggests.

Also, every time I start the car, the menu reads, Tire pressure set to light load" is that normal?
I just went to get the report from the service dept.

these were the issues that they fixed -
-recall Q60 7
- recall Q632
- Recall Q591
- Recall Q634
- Recall Q6 07
- Recall Q627
- -69LRZ - recall/campaign - this looks like it was for installation of seal -rear lamp, seal - cover, new foams and spacer per recall Q643.
- Recall Q631

for my idle complaint, his notes say - Check tested vehicle and found that the only noise heard was from high pressure pump at the top rear of engine bay, noise is comparable to brand new vehicle. no repair needed at this time.

I just have never had a car that idles that loud.

thank you for all your help. this forum is the only thing that has made me understand all the bells and whistles of this car. I think of my self as pretty tech savvy but this car confused the heck out of me.

How did you program the remote start?

If there is a "hole" in your dash right above the instrument cluster, then you have HUD. If not there will just be an indention in the dash. If there is a hole there, then youll have to ask them how to activate the HUD.
Remote start works via the In-Control app. on your phone - and it keeps the car locked!

I love this feature when it's cold outside and want to warm up the Disco remotely from inside the house.
:D
The car is so smart when it's freezing outside to automatically turn on the front windshield heating and defrost the ice while it is running. Also nice to have the hot air blowing inside too.

After getting setup on the website with my email and vin , the mgr told me to go to my car and start it, turn off the Bluetooth, and there's a little black box next to the sunglasses visor. Has a screwdriver on it. He told me to open , there was a tab on the side I never noticed. Then once open there's a button there. I held the button til it went through its stages of connecting, it would do a random pattern of lights then stopped. The mgr said it was communicating with their system and then he could see my car on the website on his end. From there, I had to go back inside, and log on to a desktop computer and read the policies and procedures and agree to them and from there I could use the remote start. Took less than 5 minutes!

also, does the blind spot notifications on the rear view mirrors only come on lux models. I don't see it on mine. And the auto high beams I don't think come on automatically either.
