13349 Views 29 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Roverish
Anyone have issues with exterior lower door panels pooping off on 2016 discovery sport ? Any ideas where to buy one other than dealership. Have looked online at length but haven’t had any luck.
Thanks is in advance

Have you lost it? Then go to a dealer or a wrecking yard. If it just pooped get new clips from dealer.
Same. Driver's side lower door trim pops off from the middle retaining clip and the panel bows outward. It happens at least once a month, and I pop it back on. I haven't lost it yet, but it's probably just a matter of time.

I have encountered the same issue on the same side. I have tried re-installing the piece but to no avail as it keeps popping off when I drive.

I am thinking of replacing just the clips to see if that the issue. On other cars that I've had thats sorted out the problem. A pack of 415 assorted clips only costs $16.95 AUD so it is definitely cheaper than going to a dealer for a brand new trim piece.
A quick up date on the situation. I went through all the offical documents about the trim piece from JLR and found that the clips are non-reusable. I have attached the appropriate document to this message.

This means to fix the issue, we all need to completely remove the panel and replace all 12 clips.

Sooo... similar issue, sort of.. Went off road and ran over a thick branch hiding in the dirt that ripped my door rocker trim right off.. which I then ran over. Doh.

Dealer wants $289 for a new one.. curious if anyone knows anywhere else to get a replacement in Santorini Black?

I’m also wondering if there’s any after market rock sliders anyone knows of?

I have the dynamic edition and have been starting to use it off-road more.. debating adding some more off-road protection.

G/day,

If you still have the piece I would recommend just buying the clips. Those pieces of trim are notorious for coming off.

It's hard to find a replacement as they are still being manufactured by JLR so only they can make them, I would suggest going to a few dealerships and asking if they will sell you the part and clips.

As regards to your to rock slider question, the only one I know you can get in the US are the factory side steps.

You could go to a fabrication shop and ask if they are will to make you some custom ones.

Thanks. Yeah unfortunately when I subsequently ran it over I may have damaged some of the clips and plastic “brackets” a bit too much, but I have to really take a good look at it to see if it’s salvageable. Plus, there is at least one crack approximately 2” in size, but I haven’t figured out where it would be when mounted back on, yet.

I was just figuring if I’m going to spend $300 on one panel, maybe spend a little more and just replace them all with some decent looking rock sliders and go for some smaller wheels/bigger/grippier tires.

Ah well!

I was looking at getting some mud flaps for mine because I drive on unsealed roads and it gets dirty extremely quickly. I was on the Land Rover Accessories site when I came across some "exterior protection" pieces (Linked).

The 2021 model Discover Sport also has a new lower panel. I am almost certain they haven't change the door architecture so the new style may be worth upgrading to. They look similar to the Freelander 2 anti-splash mouldings so I assume they are do the same job.
Yep, took 2 off my passenger side doors in the Glasshouse Mountains recently also. Anyone know where to buy the clips in Brisbane?

G'day DiscoJack,

You can buy the Land Rover OEM part clips from the dealership. The cheaper option and what I did was go to Repco and buy a few packs of Champion trim clips. It is best if you remove one of the broken/used clips and do an in-store comparison so you get the right ones.

It cost me about $20 and I haven't had any issues since I did it. I hope this helps.
Champion FLR Classica! Thanks heaps. The smash repair quote was $853 so this a much better option!

Update, I ended up just ordering the replacement panel from the dealership for $280. To repair the old one would have taken too much time and effort. I would have had to bake/heat some of the plastic “mounting brackets” to mold them back into shape and then plastic weld the outer and inner parts of the panel back together... and then I wouldn’t be too sure how well it would hold up when I’m driving 80mph down the highway.

Hoping it should pop right in without issue. I do still have all the clips from the old one, just in case.

Ordered the crossbars, too, while I was at it.

when I was at the dealership the other day I noticed mine on the drivers side was unclipped in the middle, the salesman I was talking too when I noticed it was like “yeah, just push it back in” then pointed out that the reason it’s happening is because when you open the door the bottom of that panel extends below the door, so sometimes when you’re getting out of the car you may accidentally kick it. He said they see it happen all the time. Something to watch out for.

Had the same issue with our 2017. Popped it back into place several times until it stopped working. Was bowing in the middle after that. Spectre is dead on. Was my kids hitting it getting in and out. I wish it was something cool, but no.
Never had a problem even with my grandkids going in and out, but teenagers now so more gental.

I would use silicone to glue the panel on, very adhesive and flexible. I have always used electrical formula (first on the market) but tub and bathroom silicone is magical

Another update... the part came in and it turns out it still needs to be painted... which would cost another $400... so instead of of paying almost $700 for that moulding, I’m going to attempt to repair the old one. Wish me luck. I’ll try to document it and share how it goes.

Update, the panel fell completely off while off-road at the Medano Pass a few days ago, was hanging on by a single clip. FORTUNATELY none of the clips were actually broken. I had to use a trim tool to take out 1 clip that stayed in the door, but then I just snapped the whole thing back in place and it’s sitting fine. Must figure out a way to make this thing hold on more securely.

Well... I fixed it! Saved myself $700!

I used an exacto blade to cut off the plastic brackets that were damaged when I ran it over. I found the melting point for the plastic compound is about 320-325 degrees, so I put them in the oven for 15 min at 310 degrees. That made them soft enough to try to re-shape them as best I could.

Bought a “plastic welder” (which is just a soldering iron with some plastic pieces) from Harbor Freight for $18.

Cleaned everything up, cut off/dremeled any old excess plastic “welds”. Then I just took my time, melting plastic to plastic, and adding extra layers of plastic for some added support.

Took about 2hrs to do because I was figuring it all out, but hey... $18 is better than $680!!
