Low RPM Rattle Acceleration

637 Views 15 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Brno
2.0 PETROL motor.

Having a rattle noise on acceleration, it sounds metallic for sure. Not a consistent noise, more of a broken up rattle noise.

Too quiet for me to record it, but it's audible for sure.

Anyone had similar?

It sounds like the engine has pre-ignition . Normally caused by using low octane fuel to save a few pennies.
What octane fuel are you using and is it Top Tier?
So I just picked it up from the dealer a couple days ago, no idea what octane fuel they put in it. The porter may well have put 87 in it to save themselves some money.
Sounds like my first tank of fuel when I bought mine. In the last several years have never had a problem again, including lots of mountain driving.
Good to know. This is a used 2019 with 30k. When I test drove the car, I didn't notice it. Hopefully, the dealer just put the incorrect octane in it. No MIL or anything, so fingers crossed. I also poked around the heat shields just in case. The one that goes around the exhaust was touching it, so I straightened it out a touch.
The original owner may have filled up with 87 just before trading in as well. It may take 2 fill ups to get rid of old fuel.

I fill up with non ethanol fuel but now only one company sells it locally,, Chevron 94 octane.

Very true, I hope there's no damage. I've never encountered this situation before. I do have a two month powertrain warranty so if push comes to shove, I'll have that to lean back on.

I always go with the highest octane regardless, usually top tier if possible.

Here are some videos of the sound.

Hmm that does not sound like pinging.

Hmmm, perhaps a heat shield then? Even brakes or something I guess. From a brief visual I didn't see anything crazy. It sounds maybe a little like pinging, but it's just odd.

I did see there's a revised propellor shaft heat shield here.

Broken heat shield on the turbocharger, it moves a lot by hand. Maybe this is the rattle?

I'd say a heat shield or other loose underbody part. I had one that did it at idle.

Great video, thanks for sharing!
I brought it back to the local JLR dealer, they said it was indeed the turbocharger heat shield. We will see. The coolant fairy also paid me a visit, so it's got that to be sorted as well.

Luckily, my warranty isn't up until 1/2024. I may see if I can extend it to the maximum period, but I doubt it.

If anyone else is having a similar issue, it did appear to be the turbocharger heat shield. They found two that were broken and loose, presumably related to the heat-cool cycles.
