Mapping company Magellan has a new product headed our way, its an off-road vehicle navigation platform that will allow you to map and track your days in the dirt.

Interestingly Magellan revealed that they're working with JLR on incorporating the system into their own.

Supposedly the Off-Road Vehicle Navigation platform is compatible with major automotive infotainment systems including Weblink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. At the OEM level it can be branded by an automaker to deliver a custom experience.

I like the crowd sourcing aspect of it, and it also seems like it is filling a void in the market. Currently maps don't really tell you elevation and 3d terrain details. Those things make it very useful for people who are planning on doing some actual off-road exploring.

With a company like Magellan behind it, at least we might not have to pay for updates like what some GPS systems require.
