Jaguar Land Rover has released this video which details its new 'Pothole Alert' technology. The technology aims to improve ride quality and minimize vehicle damage.
The technology is shown on a Range Rover Evoque prototype. It uses autonomous-driving radar and sonar sensors to monitor the topography of the road surface. The system identifies the location and severity of potholes, manhole covers, drains and other potential threats.
The technology can communicate with other vehicles on the road to learn of rough sections of the road. It can also briefly adjust suspension to reduce impact and smooth out the ride.
The technology will likely be seen once fully autonomous vehicles begin to arrive on the market. The system will let autonomous cars steer around potholes or minimize the bump if it can't be dodged."While this gives our customers a more comfortable ride, we think there is a huge opportunity to turn the information from these vehicle sensors into 'big data' and share it for the benefit of other road users," said JLR connected-car director Dr. Mike Bell. "This could help prevent billions of pounds of vehicle damage and make road repairs more effective."
