It seems that they wanted the vehicle to be very functional and practical. That's at least what this quote seems to tell us.

"I’d say the capability was our killer priority. Others have great design, but Land Rovers have always had class leading functionality and always will. The big trick is in putting the two things together well. We’ve spent four years working out the best way to do it."
I don't think that people will really be using this to do much off-roading though. I think that most SUVs need to say they are capable of all this tuff, but in actuality they just get driven from home to work to soccer practice.

But then I see some of the small CUVs, and sure they might be kinda capable of doing some more outdoorsy or utilitarian things, but who buys one of those cars if they actually want to do something rugged. It's like everyone is pretending that the cars are capable and that the drivers care that they are capable. Its all image.

I suppose its a design challenge to create vehicles that are practical for both city driving and actually holding people and cargo. In many ways they are competing goals, so it seems like a difficult thing to balance the two.

yeah that's what it is buying into the image, plus this is a land rover, it's what people will expect from an LR.
