My heat shield was the source of a lot of terrible chafing noise that I though was in my engine when I first got the vehicle. It took them two service calls to figure it out and it was fixed but apparently the heat shield was not positioned properly at the factory. There should be a bulletin about this as it has been a common issue.

Ever since the heat shield was fixed, I haven't had any issues (going on 6 months).

I had two heat shields come loose (there are a bunch of them), and one fall off. BY the time I got to the dealer they tightened one and replaced the other, but tried to charge me for it, claiming I must have caused it (by hitting debris on the road or something -which makes no sense considering where the heat shield was). At any rate, after a bit of disbelief and arguing, they forgave the charges (didn't take much, I must say).

My heart shield is damaged and landrover dealer told me that whole exhaust would need replacing to fix the heat shield. Is this true?
Just had the same experience - diagnosed as loose heat shield at 12 month service with a recommendation to resolve the issue from Guy Salmon in Bristol. Quoted at £1500 to replace. Arranged a meeting with Independent JLR Garage Who anticipates a quick welding resolution!

Just discovered the heatshield under the DPF hanging loose. Put the car up on ramps and discovered it's held on by a couple of little mild steel screws into a mild steel bracket on the filter body on one side and presumably a clip of some sort on the other side. Fixed it by passing a piece of stainless screwband round the whole assembly. What annoys me about it though is that it is a stupid design fault as the fixings are never going to last for any significant time where they are. Car is three years old and low milage. The other problem is that what looks like a temperature sensor for the exhaust has it's cable clipped to said heat shield so if the shield fell off completely it would rip out the cable and no doubt cause considerable expense. Going to raise it as a warranty issue but won't hold my breath. A spot of weld may well be a good fix but would be scared of burning through the filter can.

What function does the heat shield actually perform or is it another bit of over engineering from JLR?

The heat shield is under the DPF and catalytic convertors because of the tremendous heat produced. When catalytic convertors where first used they caused many a grass fire and damage to road ways.

Hi, just had exactly the same from new Guy Salmon at Cribbs, which JLR dealer did the welding for you? Thanks!

This describes exactly what happened to my car! Soo annoying. Did you get yours sorted in the end? And how? I’m reluctant to take it to a garage. Could you purchase the clips separately?

Same issue. Took it to dealer in Salisbury; up on the ramp; diagnosed as heat shield single bolt failure! Made an appointment ( earliest was 5 weeks time) ; the next day it fell off doing 60 mph!
Was told in no uncertain terms the warranty won’t cover it; to now investigating alternatives ! ( and sourcing the heat shield)
Main dealer really didn’t want to know …..

I’ve had some major issues with my car to the point of I sold it last week. The timing belt went at 33,000 miles and I managed to get it all paid for by landrover by writing an email to the CEO. As part of the works, the dealership fixed the heat shield. They welded it on (very different advice from when I originally spoke to them before I needed a new engine) so it is possible for the garage to weld it. Hopefully you get sorted.

Also I tied mine back on with garden twine! And that worked better than probably the lane rover original part
