there is the potential for the Discovery line to spin off into its own sub brand in a similar way that Range Rover has been allowed to flourish...

“With the Discovery range, beyond the Sport and the Discovery, what we do know is anything we create has to be the most versatile car in the segment in which it competes. Is there an option for a bigger car or a smaller car? Possibly, we don’t know yet,” Popham said.

but is it really logical to follow the Germans into insanity? I mean we all saw what happened last time we let the Germans lead the way ;)

They're racing to the bottom which should be the way JLG muscles their way into their higher volume margin. While their off picking up pennies in front of a steam roller, waltz in and raid their piggy banks (core clientele) ;)

I never though that they would need more models, can't think of anything else they could use. Also it might be better that they keep the brand to a handful of models rather than to stretch themselves out a lot with a ton of different segments.

That is true, another thing to consider is where they're selling those models because they might be making some of them for merging markets for the most part but still sell but maybe not as well in already well established and heavily saturated markets.
