Exhaust System Rattle

Anyone else having this issue?...

Exhaust under console area rattles when DS is climbing a hill in too low a gear. Seems like the automatic gearbox tries to keep the rpm's as low as possible (even when climbing a hill). Of course the snarky answer is to say, "Just drive it with the paddle shifters and run a higher rpm uphill." To that I say - too much else to think about than how to drive a luxury vehicle in a way it will rattle less!

I addressed it at the 10k service and they said it was a "bent shield." Interesting, because I've never hit the undercarriage. Said they "bent it back," but the rattle persists. I think they didn't even look at it. LR service is the worst of any auto company I've ever dealt with.

you should find a better dealer then. Since my 2004 Discovery II, 2010 LR4, 2011 RRScharged, and now a 2017 Disco Sport our dealer has been great in our area. But the dealer down south where the RRS is terrible to the point we drive the RRS 250miles to bring it to other dealer.

Unfortunately the only hills i have here are up the boat ramp and no rattles yet...

Yes this is correct.

I have dealt with 2 JLR dealers and have to say they are a night and day difference.
After some questions I posed the snooty dealer service dept seriously believes they have all the answers and the customer doesn't know crap.
Did you know I did not buy the car there even though the pricing was lower ?

I went with the second dealer who I interviewed and found they actually care about the customer. I bought the car from this dealer. With every visit which is a lot since they offer free car washes just for driving by - every time I had a concern, they addressed it immediately. For my complaints (fuel gauge misread and the glitchy navigation) I had to drive the service advisor to the gas station, fill up and show that 5 gallons were missing compared to the fuel gauge. Then on another car wash day, the navigation issue showed itself as soon as I started the car with the service manager - the service manager then immediately said - that is not normal to hang up and continue rebooting. Got them all fixed because I showed them the issue. ;)

You have to show the dealer what the actual issue is - have them listen to the noise while you are driving uphill in low gear with the service advisor in the car.
Once they hear the issue you can be sure they will find it.
Just describing the issue will not get you anywhere.

I recently solved a similar rattling. Only appeared uphill at low revs. i took the heatshield off the front box and a large stone fell out! it must have got in through the slats that allow hot air to escape.

I also noticed that the O2 sensor wire that is clipped to the side of the shield also vibrates a little as it’s quite loose inside oversized clips. I’ve bulked the sensor wire out with heat shrink- nice and quiet now!

I'm having the same issue with mine. Rattle between 1250-1500rpm which is worse under load i.e. up hill. I've been told it is the DPF heat shield. It's been tightened by the dealer, independent LR garage welded it which worked for a few days before being bad as ever (I assume the weld didn't hold). Car is booked to go back to the independent garage where I'll ask them to either remove the heat shield or weld the **** out of it.

It is so annoying since your perceived luxury car sounds like it's ready to fall apart. I've lived with this issue since September 2020. Hoping it'll be fixed soon.

This is an easy and common one. There is a thin metal pipe that mounts to a bracket, that is welded to the exhaust pipe. Unfortunately, over time these brackets snap. The dealers will always quote to replace the exhaust as they refuse to weld the bracket back on. You can go to any local muffler shop and they will give it a quick weld for cheap.

Thanks for the reply, I've booked it into the local LR specialist who hopefully can fix it. LR dealer network near me are useless!
