Does anyone notice an exhaust type smell inside of their vehicle upon startup? It lasts for several minutes and finally seems to dissipate...either that or I get used to the smell.
The smell is as though it's running rich. I can not confirm that's it's actually exhaust. I don't hear a leak and my clothes do not seem to retain the smell of rich running exhaust after I exit the vehicle....like clothes tend to do when permeated with rich running exhaust.

I've noticed a very similar smell in the past but it's only been when I was running the heated/cooled seats, like there was a particular smell being blow out through the venting of the seats. I had always dismissed it.
It's now happening without the heated/cooled seats being activated. I don't have the best nose in the world, but not the worst either. My wife says she doesn't smell it but, I take that assessment with a grain of salt LOL!

Anyone?

I have a 2016 HSE LUX. Gas engine. I notice the exhaust smell while sitting at idle for an extended period. Like when pulled over to talk on the phone with the engine on, or stuck in stopped traffic. Since I own a California smog inspection station I went to my shop and recreated the scene where the exhaust smell occurs in the car cabin just sitting at idle. All doors and windows closed, I put the tail pipe sniffer inside the car to read any Carbon Monoxide, Hydrocarbons, NOx. Even though I could smell that smell there was no reading at all on the test equipment. All were reading 0 except 02 at 21% which is normal. So I now know it is not CO, HC, or NOx that I smell. I now think it could be some sort of gasket adhesive or something like that? Has anyone had a successful repair that eliminated the smell?

I bought a CO meter to control the smell. I taped under the hood half of the air intake for the ventilation. When you look at the hood, there is a rubber on it that closes to the plastic part before the windscreen. Only at the right side, the rubber is not going on and in the right corner you have the possibility to take air into the cabin. So i only left the intake free after the rubber in the middle. Now i'm testing for the result with my co meter in the car...

Hi - I have a 2014 LR2 i4 2.0L turbo - same / similar to one of the engines used in the DS - at approx 40k miles (5 years old) the car had exhaust fumes in the cabin. On investigation these fumes were found to be associated with a cracked turbo housing - fumes were transmitted into the cabin air 'inlet' located closeby. There was no noticeable reduction in performance and the turbo was spinning without issue. The fumes could be eliminated when travelling at moderate speed (30 or 40 mph) but when the vehicle was stationary the fumes were overpowering. In the end the turbo / exhaust manifold unit was replaced & the problem was solved.

This is due to the injectors needing to be replaced. I thought mine smelly like hoover dust.

That exhaust fumes smell inside the cabin is most likely a cracked and leaking exhaust manifold on the engine. This is a very common defect issue and a costly repair. It should be a recall as it’s a defective weld on many units, and has been a problem for years. The fumes are very unhealthy and enter the cabin with the HVAC system on. Suggest you have it diagnosed and repaired asap.
The turbo charger is connected to the exhaust manifold as one unit so the entire unit must be replaced as one. The only other repair is to remove the exhaust manifold/turbo charger unit and then weld shut the crack on the manifold, then reinstall it. This will save the cost of replacing the unit part which is expensive. The job, either way, is labor intensive so make sure the turbo charger is in good working order if you choose not to replace it. An easy diagnostic is to take a mirror and look at the exhaust manifold on the back of the engine (drivers side on left hand drive cars). If it is leaking it will be black smoke stained at the crack.
The tailgate struts wear out in time and with use, that’s normal. They are an easy and inexpensive fix. Many aftermarket replacement ones are available on Amazon or other sources.
The low oil level indicator is most likely a faulty oil level sensor. Also a fairly easy fix.

2016 Disco HSE Lux also with exhaust smell in cabin. Issue was cracked exhaust manifold. Original design had cast iron and stainless steel. Each port was separate coming from the head. The new design has one continuous casting across all four cylinders. It was clearly cracked and there was also plenty of evidence from the black soot where it leaked. I bought OEM replacement turbo assembly made by Borg Warner. The original was made in Germany and the new one in China.

Did the work myself and the problem is solved. car runs great and plan on keeping it for the long haul.

This car only goes to dealer for software updates. I will tackle everything else. Overall I’m impressed with the car. They are not noted for reliability but it’s what my wife wanted. I just have to keep it running and after about 7 years of ownership, it has been manageable.
