10K mile annual service - What to expect?

Hey all - so the DS has to go in for the 10K mile service as recommended by the dealer when I picked up the lease.
Any ideas what to expect?

I'm told this is quite pricey... ($400 dollar range?) but besides that point, what do they actually do? (I get my truck serviced every 5000 miles and it's not that much)...What should I make sure they check and replace?
Referring to stuff besides the obvious oil change and tire rotation.

I think definitely need new wiper blades. And need them to check some ticking in the driver door.

Thanks in advance!

I just had my first service done when my phone app reminded me of service due....

The dealer quoted over $300 to do an oil change.

So I took mine to a qualified independent that has the JLR diagnostic equipment to connect your car to their computer, change the oil and to reset the service indicators.

Cost: $95 for oil change, filter, fluid top off, tire rotation, and service light reset.

OP:
As for the wiper blades, just measure the size and get it at Autozone.
The ticking noise is a known issue - see the recent post by the admin: "What to dislike about..."

Any recommendations on a independent that has the JLR diagnostic equipment?
I assume some of the big national chains have the necessary equipment?

Also - I am guessing it doesn't make a difference in the lease terms if I take it to a qualified independent?
400+ for an oil change, filter, and tire rotation is a little much...

I would "Yelp.com" your area for a European service dealer that handles JLR since you are in Boston.

My indy in Southern California is a trusted honest mechanic who was a master mechanic for Penske auto group and went independent. He has worked on my: Land Rover LR3, BMW 3, 5 and X5s, Mercedes R350, and many Japanese cars for many years...

No, it would not make a difference if the service was done outside the dealer. You need to keep records of the service and make sure the mechanic can reset the service interval indicator on the car.
As long as the fluids and parts are manufacturer compliant with an OEM - you should have no issues with the lease return...

I had my 10K mile service done a the dealership. It was the last time I will do that. It cost nearly $600 and there were no value adds at all. They could have at least cleaned the leather seats.... I am not even certain what they did other than change the oil and inspect filters. Apparently there are several grease points as well.

In addition, as I am nearing 20K miles, I checked my service schedule and it is laid out in 16K increments (unless you are driving in unusual circumstances). Therefore, the dealerships are telling us 10K but the service schedule says 16K. Any thoughts on this?

Are you sure the service listed at 16K wasn't in kilometers? 16,000 kilometers is just about 10,000 miles...

Also, as I recall from the manual, the service intervals listed several models, so make sure you are looking at the correct one...(don't have the manual in my hand to confirm, just relying on memory:eek:)

I have done my first two services myself, using LR spec supplies. So far I have never had a service interval reminder come up in the truck, nor have I done anything to reset it. I wonder if there is some kind of sensor that is monitoring oil condition, or if the service interval function in our truck is broken.

I did try to follow the manual guidance to access the service interval data in the trucks menus and it simply is not present.

At some point I need to take it in for the license plate recall, and now I have a email from LR about some kind of software upgrade, which I am reluctant to install given how stable all the electronics have been for the last year.

The service indicator seems to be a CBS (condition based service) like my BMW - depending on how you drive the car, how many miles one way, if the engine warmed up (drive cycle), length of last service in months, etc... Does not appear to be just miles only....

I found the same issue - the service indicator did not show in the car.

I found out when I used my phone app to check on the location of the car and journey logs.

On the bottom of the screen, there was a service reminder in amber....

dgrant - I looked at the service maintenance schedule that can with my owners manual, etc. That document covers all models of Land Rover/Range Rover. The section for Land Rover Discovery Sport in my manual shows oil change at 10,000 mile intervals (I think the Range Rover Sport was 16,000 miles).

Brought car in for first yearly service and cost was $0.00 which was nice. Car was in the shop from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. and they did multiple software upgrades, changed out the O2 sensor and cleaned the car. So they probably spent no more than an hour on the service itself. The service rep told me that the first service is very intense and normally costs $600 Cdn ( but it free for everyone:confused:) and next service is about $250 including parts.

Car was in service for one year but no warning came up on the dash, some hogwash about the car giving owners more time before bring the car in for service.

Was now told by a dealer that there is a software update because the service warning does not work on most cars,,,,HMMMM do I want a warning that has to be reset at the dealer????

I've had two oil changes. I just tell them to change the oil only. First time was $150, second time was $135 with a 10% off service coupon that JLR sent in the mail. I get tire rotations for free at Discount Tire. When the engine and cabin filters need to be replaced, I'll get them at half the cost at Atuozone and and change them myself.

Ok, I talked to another guy and he said 10,000. I have an appointment. What sucks is I distinctly remember the service interval being longer than my Audi, because I commented on it when we got the car.

Over on the UK site they're saying the DS Ingenium engine is 16k.

Maybe the "software enhancements" will also bring back the service reminder

Ranchos - I'm sure the DS Ingenium engine in the UK is 16,000 kilometers (10,000 miles). I know I was really confused when I first looked at the service schedule and saw that they had every LR/RR model listed (had to look under the correct model) - and then in kilometers and miles.

#24 ·
Ok, finally got the car in. Service guy confirmed it was 10k miles. He said the Evoque, which has the same engine, originally was rated at 16k miles, but then they decided it was too long and rolled all the 2 liter engines to 10k.

Anyhow he also confirmed the Service reminder was broken in some of the software packages.'

EDIT: also $650?!? Yikes. I knew it was going to be expensive.... Is there gold flake in the pollen filter?

I dropped off my 2016 DS for the first 10K Miles service yesterday - was told to expect ~540$ - According to the dealer the only essential thing to do is the Oil chage which is 140$ by itself, the rest is recomended stuff by JLR like rotate wheels, chaging all filters - engine and AC etc. - these all sum up to ~540$... will see how long it takes them to complete it all :)

I went to the Langley dealer ( not impressed) for my first service and asked about the second service and was told it would be less than $300 with parts included but the 3rd service would be more. Will phone again to see what the price is now,, looking like a good independent is the way to go.

I was having problems with voice activation of the navigation system entering some addresses so I asked the service rep ( could not help), passed on to a mechanic ( says these things happen), and then passed onto a sales rep who got out the owners manual to see how it worked. I then went to Richmond Land Rover next time I was close and they sent out a "delivery specialist" to help. He could not enter my home address orally but could enter places hundreds of kilometres away, he tried on other cars on the lot but could not use voice navigation to enter my address. Would accept it with the touch screen but the car got confused with all the numbers in my street name. He spent 30 minutes trying so I thought hmm maybe I should go here for next service.

Service says on the next service I should change out anti-freeze, brake fluid, all filters, etc, etc and the cost would be around $800.

I think these guys just make thing s up as they go. Ironically Langley phoned 2 weeks ago and told my wife that a service was due and they had made an appointment to come in 2 days.Strange since last service was done 8 months ago.

Weird. I've been into the Langley dealership two times, and both times i asked about the 32,000 KM service, and both times, I was told it was about $900, which is absurd. I didn't purchase the vehicle from there, because I went there 4 times looking at the vehicles, and not once did a sales rep even approach me, even though I went in the show room and sat in the vehicle, played around with it and everything, so we walked out, and the only acknowledgement we received was the receptionist saying have a nice day as we walked out the door.

Maybe I'll call Richmond tomorrow and see what they charge. That is where I purchased the DS.

There is also a place here in Langley called NorLang Auto that claims they are specialists in JLR, maybe I'll give them a shout. Have you heard of them?

Just had my 10k service done. Approx $400 was a huge sticker shock. The itemized portion listed oil change, tire rotation & wiper blades. Plus complimentary fluids. (So generous!)

My previous car was a Jeep and I did all the routine service myself save for tire rotations. Even the few times I had a Jiffy Lube or the dealer do it, it was always about $50 at most.

Last time I will take it to the dealer.

I’m not sure I’d blame anything on the dealership, that’s what I was quoted for the 10k service. I asked what it would cost BEFORE they did anything and then I asked what all it involved. I said,,,just do the oil change. I’d blame yourself. It’s your choice. I still don’t understand why so many people have all the unnecessary stuff done? You can pick and choose what you want them to do. Discount Tires does rotations for free. Wipers and air filters can be had from auto zone for much less and you can change them yourself in 5 mins. $400 is ridiculous for what basically should be no more than an oil change.
That being said, see my above post. It’s one thing to take a Jeep to a Jiffy Lube but there’s no way I’d have my LR’s oil changed at a Jiffy Lube. Better to have it done and logged at a dealership. If you have them do the oil change only, sure it’s stilll a bit more expensive but it’s not totally outrageous and it’s worth the piece of mind IMHO.

Picked mine up from the 40k mile service yesterday. I had them do an oil change only and it came to $136.00 after tax with a 10% off service coupon that LR sent out. Plus they filled the washer fluid and washed/vacced it....and I got an F Pace loaner. I’ll call it a bargain. One more reason I’m going back for another LR product in about 10 months.

I think this is a good post.... expectations vs. reality.
Would welcome more input from users with other vehicles...
Firstly - I say LR with its 10,000 once a year service at $400+ is a bit of a joke..... Audi, MB, Lexus.... all are high end and provide loaners, free car wash, and never charge $400 for what's basically an oil change with tire rotation... especially on 4 cylinder small engine vehicles .(I am not including here any high end 8 cylinders which would be more and possibly approach that price point)
My A6 V6 3.2 liter would cost under $100 for oil/filter change + the typical check / complimentary loaner / top off all fluids / car wash etc....

SO I don't see JLR as a stand out comparing to the competition.....

Actually BMW is only one still to provide free services...at least last year when I was shopping around......at some point they were paying for everything (oils change, wipers, breaks)...I think some of those perks went away now. - Now that's what I would consider an outstanding bargain in the field of premium and luxury vehicles.

$136 would be fair...I'd be OK with it..... I need to do some shopping around as so far the best quote I got from JLR dealer service was $190 - just for an oil/filter change.... the service guys were quick to point out that is NOT the same as the 10k service which is required as part of the maintenance....I called them on the BS....saying everything else is just a "touch-up" I can do myself or at any other regular shop.....but they stick to their script and say that LR needs to see records of the comprehensive service every 10k miles....not just oil/filter change.

So I am afraid that at some point I will have to give in and pay $450 for a BS service.... (my car has 7000 miles on it as of now)...I will do intermediate (every 5000miles oil and filter changes myself or at a local shop) but this concept of 10k service at $450 seems like money making scheme and not a fair part of ownership experience.

This experience leaves a bad taste in my mouth and makes me want to explore other brands.....

#39 ·
Yup total BS. What’s required is fluid replacements done at the proper intervals. Tire rotation and cabin filters are not essential. However, I have my tires rotated every 3k and keep the record. I change my engine air filter once a year a keep the receipt.
I do monitor the inspection they do for issues such as brake wear, etc.

Some dealerships are just less than scrupulous. That can easily ruin a brand experience. So far my dealership has treated me honestly and fairly on regular service and warranty issues and LR has been exceptional to deal with on any issue I’ve brought to them.

I think $150 for a 10k oil change is plenty fair. I pay almost $100 for my RAM’s oil change for full synthetic in a big V8 at every 6k so.....

I will say this. On my last three issues, I have started a case with LRUSA before I go to the dealership. It seems to put some urgency on the situation.

When I asked about the second service prices initially I was told less than $300 in Langley. when it got closer to the date I Phoned Langley to see what it would set me back and was told around $700 ( I later got a written price list that ranged from $300 to $900), Richmond quoted the same, MCL said $500 but would pick car up at home. 3 weeks before service due I phoned MCL who now said $750 but could not book me in for 6 weeks.

I went to the Langley dealer bought the oil and filter and had the work none at BCAA for about $100 this included the oil I had brought with me.

I brought the car in last summer for warranty ( needed 2 injectors) work and software update ( I never received service reminders) and they asked where I had the work done as the computer showed overdue. I told them and no problem with warranty.

Next service was done at same place using Liquid Moly oil, cost was $99 and a free $10 gas card. Made an appointment, drove in had a coffee, watched them work on my car and was out in 45 minutes. Closest dealer is 30 minutes one way so it would be 2 hours driving, 1 hour doing the check in and an other 1 hour picking up the car as it is never ready.

Saved a few hundred dollars and lots of time going to independent.
